linkedin Unpacking Unconscious Bias in Recruitment: A 2-Minute Read | Sonu Goswami | 25 comments
During one of the networking sessions, I approached a group of attendees and started a conversation with a young man who was discussing the latest advancements in artificial intelligence.
As the conversation progressed, I turned to him and said, “Your company must be thrilled to have such a talented developer like you on their team.”
He smiled and replied, Actually, I’m the Chief Technology Officer. The woman next to me is our lead developer.
I felt a wave of embarrassment wash over me. How could I have made such an assumption? Why did I automatically think he was the developer and not the CTO, and that the woman couldn’t be in a leadership position?
Good morning, LinkedIn Connections 😊 🙏
In my last post , I highlighted how hiring managers screen resumes based on candidates' educational qualifications/Grades and how those who have graduated from premium institutions hold an advantage over others. This phenomenon can be categorized as the *Confirmation Bias* (slide), which is a form of unconscious bias. Today, let's delve into unconscious bias: beliefs and assumptions that we hold without realizing it. They are instinctive, automatic, and can significantly influence the decisions we make and the way we perceive others.
Unconscious bias significantly impacts workplace diversity *In Recruitment*. When these biases go unchecked, they become ingrained in our systems and practices, hindering efforts to foster inclusivity. Many HR professionals acknowledge their policies may fall short in addressing this challenge. Recruitment processes often unintentionally obstruct diversity efforts due to the unconscious biases of those involved.
