Ever found yourself juggling the communication needs of various stakeholders and wondering who to prioritize? 🤔

As HR professionals, Project managers, and Leaders, we often face this challenge. Introducing the Salience Model—a strategic approach for prioritizing stakeholders and determining who truly holds influence.

Imagine you’re managing a project with a diverse set of stakeholders, each with different needs and levels of influence. The Salience Model helps you cut through the noise by assessing stakeholders based on three key criteria:

1️⃣ Power: Can they influence project outcomes? (e.g., a client who can alter the project’s direction with their decisions.)

2️⃣ Urgency: Is there an immediate need for action? (e.g., a regulatory body demanding urgent compliance updates.)

3️⃣ Legitimacy: Is their involvement appropriate and justified? (e.g., a project sponsor whose investment is important.)

Here’s how the model categorizes stakeholders: 👇

✴ Inactive Stakeholders

☑ Latent Stakeholders: Possess power but lack immediate urgency or recognized legitimacy. While awareness of their existence is essential, proactive communication is not required at this stage.

☑ Dormant Stakeholders: Similar to Latent Stakeholders, they hold power but exhibit neither urgency nor legitimacy. Monitoring their potential influence is crucial, but dedicated communication strategies are unnecessary.

(A) Low-Priority Stakeholders

🎯 Discreet Stakeholders: Legitimacy exists, but power and urgency are absent. Their primary engagement might involve responding to specific inquiries rather than proactive outreach.

🎯 Demanding Stakeholders: Exhibit high urgency but lack power and legitimacy. Their demands require timely attention, though their influence is limited.

(B) High-Priority Stakeholders

🎯 Dominant Stakeholders: Possess both power and legitimacy, making their input essential. Effective communication and relationship building are paramount.

🎯 Dangerous Stakeholders: Combine power with urgency, potentially creating challenges or opportunities. Their needs must be addressed promptly to mitigate risks or leverage their support.

🎯 Dependent Stakeholders: Legitimacy and urgency are present, but power is limited. Maintaining open communication channels is vital to harness their potential contributions.

(C) Critical Stakeholders

🎯 Definitive Stakeholders: The ideal stakeholder profile, combining power, legitimacy, and urgency. Continuous engagement and satisfaction are important for project success.

By focusing on these categories, the ☑ Salience Model helps streamline communication and ensures you’re addressing the right stakeholders effectively.

Hope you find this model as useful in your projects as I do!
